Happy Thanksgiving! 10 Questions with… Brittany from Glitter & Bold

Glitter and boldEvery week we have a fun “10 questions” session with some of our contributors to the Indie Craft Sampler. Some serious, but mostly fun questions. Our second installment for the Winter (Dec/Jan) Sampler Contributors is with Brittany of Glitter & Bold.

1. How or what made you decide to start up your own shop?

I made my first mug as a gift for an old college roommate, using some oil based sharpie pens and a white mug. After that, I was hooked. Soon I had about a dozen different designs on mugs floating all around my house. When I got an offer to sell (thanks mom!) I realized that I could turn my new hobbie into something more, and Glitter & Bold was born.

2. Is there a story behind your shop name “Glitter and Bold”?

I spend way too much time on the internet, and always found myself drawn to brands/blogs/etc. with two things in the name. From there, it was just a matter of finding two words I liked together. “Glitter” seemed like an obvious choice since my workspace is always covered in it (even though I only have 1 item with glitter?!). After that, I sat in my house doing word associations and rhyming out loud to myself for about an hour. Eventually “bold” won out (it rhymes with gold) and the name stuck.

3. Where do you get ideas/inspiration from when coming up with new products for your shop?

Everywhere! I started off scouring Pinterest for interesting quotes and designs, but today my new ideas come mostly from ideas people have for custom orders or word of mouth. I recently started selling at shows and markets in person, and it’s amazing to hear how other people are inspired by designs I already have.

4. Tell us about a unique or quirky habit of yours

I lick the frosting off a cupcake before I eat the cake part. No one in my family knows where this came from, but I’ve been doing it since the first time I was handed a cupcake.

5. Is your Etsy shop your full time job? If not, what is your other job?

Sometimes it feels that way, but during the day I’m a proud full time employee at a middle school here in Connecticut.Glitter & bold

6. What are a few of your favorite items from your shop?

My all time favorite is my mug with the quote “I’m no hero, I put my bra on one boob at a time like everyone else” by Tina Belcher (Bob’s Burgers). I also love everything with “You are the Gin to my Tonic.”

7. If you had a time machine, where and when would you go?

I think Woodstock would be really fun for a day (especially if I could come prepared and bring bottled water and snacks).

8. Favorite animal/least favorite animal?

My favorite animal is the penguin. Least favorite would have to be Chihuahuas since I got bit by one in high school (sorry Chihuahuas!).

9. What were your favorite musical groups in junior high?

Led Zeppelin and Usher (quite a combo, I know).

10. And finally, why should people visit your shop?

Everything in my shop is completely hand painted by yours truly and one of a kind, and I think that adds a really special touch to any gift, whether it’s for someone else or just yourself. I also offer a lot of options for customizing, which is a great way to let someone know you’re thinking of them, no matter where they are.

Brittany had contributed 50 of her wonderful tea towels for the Winter Sampler but USPS decided to destroy the box & then keep half of the towels 😦 I feel terrible so please go to Glitter & Bold and shop! 🙂 The Winter Sampler will go on sale December 1st.  But for now if you have not already purchased a November sampler box click here.
